Al would like you to know all rewards will go directly to San Benito County Police Activities League to help underserved youth participate in sports.
Al may be a humble man but, he saves lives and revitalizes underserved communities. He has a tremendous passion for helping youth stay out of trouble and live a positive life. This is evident in his 17 years of dedicated service to communities around California and in his current role in San Benito County.
As the County Gang Prevention Coordinator, Al has instituted a gang resistance and education training program in schools over the past 5 years, along with a bullying prevention program. He has worked tirelessly to obtain grants to provide more officers in schools and in just a short time they have seen tremendous results including reduced violence, more incidents of bullying being reported, more teacher involvement and kids showing more empathy towards each other.
One life altering story which sticks in Al’s mind is of a child who was being bullied and on the verge of suicide. This child’s parent was unaware of what was going on. Fortunately Al and a sheriff’s deputy were presenting to a group of students from another school. Afterwords, a friend of this bullied child spoke up, and as a result they were able to save this young life.
Earlier this year Al helped bring the Jr. Giants Program to San Benito County. For their first year they anticipated 200 participants and they have ended up with 522. What makes Al proud is that all 522 of these kids have qualified for the Jr Giants Festival by reading daily and completing more than 720 minutes during the season through the Round the Bases Reading Program. In addition to the Jr. Giants Program, Al has established the USTA H.I.T.S. program in the County and these two programs have really brought a sense of pride to the community leading to action from the City to revitalize, clean up and improve baseball diamonds and tennis courts to give these kids a safe place to play.
When he can find the time Al loves fishing, jogging and has recently taken on a new challenge - being the JV Lacrosse Coach at San Benito High School.
Thank you Al and let’s reward him for his dedication to improving kid’s lives and providing them the support and positive outlets they need.
