It started with a Christmas gift of $100 in 2011 - that came with precious words “you have to use some or all of it to make a difference in someone’s life." She wanted to help a child who needed a cleft lip/palate surgery but her $100 fell short. Sonali decided to make up the deficit of $150 by redeeming recyclable bottles and cans at the recycling center. In May of 2012, she was able to donate $250 needed for a cleft lip surgery through Smile Train organization.
Once she figured it out she started turning the recycling into cash and generated additional funds for the Smile Train cause.
Each week Sonali gathers recyclables from her family, friends, and school community to turn them into hard cash for good causes. To date, her non-profit Recycling4Smiles has donated over $37,000 by recycling over 40,000 pounds of cans and bottles.
Rewarding Sonali not only encourages young and determined women to stand up and make a difference in this world, it helps children get the surgery they need for cleft lips.
All rewards collected on behalf of Sonali will be routed to SmileTrain.
