Dr. Carol Weyland Conner noticed that in her county of tremendous abundance, people were going hungry. She took action and researched how she could help end hunger. She found that food retailers threw out highly nutritious food on a daily basis because of their “sell by dates.” Carol created a food redistribution program through the WhitePonyExpress, to pick up food from grocery chains such as NobHill Foods, Whole Foods, Costco, Sprouts, and many others food retailers such as The Cheesecake Factory and local farmers’ markets, and delivered this food to recipients throughout Contra Costa County. This was one of the first programs in the nation that picked up “fresh” food such as dairy, meat, and produce, and had it delivered to recipients within 2 hours. On a daily basis, White Pony Express delivers 3500 lbs of food. Less than 16 months after it was founded it delivered over 55 tons of fresh food in December.
The food program was successful however, Carol felt she had to do more. She then created 3 more programs to further enrich the lives of people in need; a mobile boutique where they drive out to the community and provide fine clothing, toys, and books to people in need, the White Pony Inn which looks for creative means of addressing homelessness, and Francis in the Schools which provides a musical drama and an Umbrian Faire for impoverished children in a one day outing to let them learn about the values of the patron of San Francisco, St Francis of Assisi. The children literally find this to be the “best day of my life.”
Carol is continually pushing forward and making a difference in people’s lives. However, in order for the WhitePonyExpress’ operations to grow she needs help with vehicles, donations, space, and additional resources. Let us reward Carol and help people who have been marginalized have a brighter future.
